Language Arts
Reading
The core part of our day will be spent on developing reading skills. We will have silent reading, partner reading, group reading, and whole class reading. Concepts we will be focusing on are comprehension, vocabulary, main idea, plot, setting and characterization. We will also be working on fluency, expression, and comprehension.
Students should read for at least 20 minutes outside of school every day. This year is a very important year for increasing your child’s reading fluency and comprehension. You can help your child by listening to him/her read aloud and also by asking questions about what he/she is reading.

Writing
This year, we will be focusing on the process of writing. This means we will be working on brain storming, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Students have a writing notebook in which they write in each day. We are currently practicing writing skills such as: indenting, word spacing and paragraph writing. Students should be practicing their writing skills at home each night. Challenge them to write a unique/intriguing story.
